Stripped floorboards in bathroom - are they suitable?

I've been looking at houses for sale (planning ahead a couple of years) but one thing that puts me off is seeing estate pics on the web where the toilet seat and lid are up. It makes even a nice bathroom look squalid.
It's also amazing how many people have their homes photographed with the washing still up in the back yard or on a clothes horse in the living room. Nearly all have the TV left on.
Seats and lids down, please!

Just (almost) finished our bathroom after 5 years. We went for ply and then lino. The advantage of ply is that it helps spread the load from the cast iron bath we just had put in.

I, too, never fail to be amazed by the number of people who seem to think that the view down the lavatory pan is a real 'feature' of the room.

When we bought this house, the bathroom toilet seat and lid were made of a transparent acrylic material with a shoal of goldfish encapsulated in them (I think they were plastic).

So it looked as though we had goldfish swimming in our loo. Aaaah - tasteful, eh?

There was a long running conversation in The Guardian Weekend "Space solves" section about sealing the gaps between stripped floorboards. One of the more interesting recommendations was to use Acrylic window frame sealant - silicone is a no as it gets slippery. http://www.guardian.co.uk might turn it up. In conjunction with a hard wearing floor varnish it should create a water tight useable floor - if it doesn't then lino over it!

We had stripped floors in my last house and I wanted to try it out at some point but then we moved and gaps in the floor are the least of my worries now. In the old house the builder had MDFed the bathroom floor then tiled. He did a pretty poor job, the tile adhesive was stronger than the tiles so when the house flexed and warmed the bathroom tiles cracked. As MDF absorbs water then this is only going to get worse as the gaps get bigger then board swell and will flex more. Still I found a nice bright bath mat covered the gaps for the agent to take pictures...

I think we have decided to definitely change the flooring. Would really like to have the floorboards lifted and then some nice tiles laid maybe on top of some ply.

Why will you lift the floorboards? If your carpet step is deep enough, lay thin ply over the floor boards, then the tiles on the ply.

the floorboards in the bathroom are the same level as those in the hall leading into it so it would look strange wouldnt it?

No more odd than carpet and underlay in a room leading off a boarded hallway.
