Sometimes you don't want endless possibilities, you just want the toy

Then surely, Yer Ladyship, you just go out and buy that toy. Lego was conceived on the principle of endless possibilities, just as Meccano was: a kit that could become whatever you want it to be. That's no longer the case, and I believe today's children are therefore missing out on a valuable resource for enhancing their creativity.

Agree! I could never see the point of single-purpose Lego.
Nor can my children and grandchildren. The pieces all go into one toycrate and are used to make whatever their imaginations come up with.

But I already did a major elephant project this year ( a couple of 2 dimensional pieces to match something we bought last year, artwork finished but printing as yet not ), and lego isn't really my thing. I like Feltwell's suggestion better :lol:

Indeed, there is plenty that's likely to keep them amused. It's quite amazing what Mr Google can find made out of lego :wink:

Quite agree on the issue of modern Lego.

When I used to play with the technical Lego around 1980, I had a big set of basic Lego, along with the car chassis, tractor, and helicoptor. All had instructions of how to make them, but all the parts were effectively generic. Meaning I could make alomost anything out of them, such as a cable car, suspension bridge, spaceships, various cars.

Although when the kids are old enough I may invest in some Lego to make this:

Thanks for that Wobs. That page contains the answer to my problem about gear ratios - I have been adding more of the gears I already have whereas other ratios have become available over the years.
