For a professional such as yourself, then of course you need really tough tools that are going to withstand day-in-day-out punishment. But some of my rather more unusual tools only get used a few times a year, and for cases like that it's good to be able to buy cheap tools. It's a matter of "cheap or none at all".

I agree with you there Penners. My £60 wall chaser is fantastic and will do all the grooves I need for the house. If it falls apart after that, I don't care. The £20 angle grinder is also lasting well as is the £30 router. The £40 hammer drill lasted about 6 years before falling to pieces. The bad buy was the circular saw as the guides are so thin they just bend all over the place but at £35 it wasn't an awful lot of money to waste.

I generally find that its always worth buying the right tool for the job but as my usage is going to be low, its best to buy cheap first and see how useful I find it. If it proves its worth, I can always buy the better tool at 4 to 8 times the price later.

Wow - you lashed out! My SDS drill cost me just over 15 quid at B&Q, 3 years ago. Hasn't let me down yet.
