What is the "membrane" though?

It's simply the glass. You can't really refer to it as a "sheet" or "pane", because it's made up of lots of small pieces held together by the lead cames. The expression normally used, therefore, is (in my limited experience) the "membrane".

Indeed he does - I've had the privilege of seeing some of his work. That's why I'm hoping that he's otherwise occupied, and unable to write a critique on my method.

Is there any kind of equation to figure out window size in proportion to a wall or house?

I can't remember whether you're listed, Rob. If so, then your CO will have a view on that.

If you're not, then the building regs say that your glazed area of window must be no less than 10% of the floor area of the room, and the opening window area must be no less than 5% of the floor area. I should perhaps add that I learned this equation several decades ago, but I believe it still applies. But do check.

If you're planning a brand new window, where none existed before, then there are also all kinds of regulations about insulation values. But I'm afraid I know nothing about the details. Thanks Penners , i am just replacing like for almost like , what i am looking for is window size proportioned properly to the house. Would i be better to go small and have two lights or a bit larger and have three? The cottage is dark and these will be the only windows in the rooms , but i want them to look right.

This shows the windows in the context of our house, which is not grand but I do think they look lovely. They would look very much at home in your cottage too.

(They do need a lot of TLC though, which I will undertake in the spring and/ or dry)

I only included this picture to show you the other style of metal window we have. This window is at the back of the house and mirrors the stone mullion in the same room.

They look spot on, i see your middle light opens while the two out side ones are fixed, this could be a good way to keep the cost down as i will only need one iron frame instead of two.

Did you also spot the hook/catch thingy on the larger window? This keeps the window open instead of a stay, and I love this detail.

I would advise against our hinges though as they are not a great security feature! Luckily we are tucked up a track so hopefully won't attract any trouble.

That's very difficult for anyone else to advise you on, Rob, particularly without seeing the building "live". It comes down to personal taste and having an eye for what looks right (always assuming that the building regs are not going to be involved!).

Hi Rob.

Those leaded casements windows look extremely nice in that particular house, and a good choise. Having had the pleasure of looking at your house, these style of windows , in my opinion, will not have the same effect. Repeat, the windows are nice, but not appropriate. As Penners suggested, at the end of the day you have to have what makes you happy, and that should be good enough for all of us on this site.
