There's an 'obvious' flaw with the work I've done in my bathroom , can anyone work out what it is?, I'll come clean once someone's identified it.

I see water supply for the basin, but no waste pipe?

I see lots of plywood which will eventually go soggy around the bath and swell up, causing your tiles to pop off and making you think that you should have used a waterproof tile-backing board like as wedi or aquapanel?

No bath taps? but I guess you'll do those when you take the bath out to tile under the rim.

Are we missing something really obvious here? Give us a clue.

Well done Andrew. I spent a day squaring the walls off, building a frame for the bath (don't like plastic bathscreens), fitting and cutting the plywood. Went off to the plumbing centre and was trying to remember whether the basin waste was 32mm or 40mm when I suddenly realised that I hadn't fitted a waste pipe.

Since the plywood panel under the window was the first to go on I had to dismantle everything (fortunately I'd screwed it all together), take the panel off and then fit the waste pipe before putting it all back together.

I will be around the bath but I use a thin tile backer board (6mm) called, ironically, No More Ply - it's a cement (oops) based tile backer board but without the insulation you get on the Wedi, Aquapanel boards. In addition the plywood is WBP - much more stable when wet than standard ply. The ply's primarily for strengthening the frame since the tiles are stone.

Who among us has not made this sort of mistake from time to time. For this very reason I always screw such constructions together. If nails or glue are used you can be sure that the whole thing will have to come apart again to complete some vital missing element, or to recover the tools / phone / van keys that have just been sealed up....

That thin tile backing sounds good. Where are you sourcing that?

I can recommend BALs paint-on tanking system for use on ply, plasterboard and similar substrates - I've used it a few times now, and it really does seem to work well. And for sealing around the bath, Teleseal strips are a godsend - they are guaranteed leak-proof, and avoid having to run beads of silicone.

I'm a bit worried about those electric meter tails sticking out of the middle of the floor. :shock:

Incidentally, I echo what Gervase said about the BAL tanking system. It's excellent (if not exactly cheap). But I'd never heard of Teleseal strips, which I shall definitely try next time.

Screwfix sell Teleseal, and any good builders' merchant should be able to order the BAL kit. It does cost an eye-watering sixty odd quid, however!

I think they just call it the Bal WP1 Tanking Kit. You get a liquid primer, glassfibre corner reinforcing cloth, and a paste topcoat in a glamorous shade of silver.

Is there some double entendre to the word "tanking" that I, in my youthful innocence, don't know about?

inwood, you still haven't explained yourself, as regards the meter tails. Had your electrician had a rough night?

What are meter tails'? Do you mean the two grey things in the middle of the floor - these are discarded frame fixings M8x110m if my memory serves correctly. I have a steel case of screws all neatly sorted into individual plastic boxes, that is until you try and pick it up without closing the lid properly. Took a little while to re-organise things and these two frame fixings had worn screw threads so were left on the floor for the clear up.

What are meter tails'?

Ah - I somehow didn't think your electrician would be quite that spaced out!

If you look at your electric meter you'll see two thick (probably grey) cables running out of it and into your consumer unit (fuse board). Those are your meter tails.
