Robgil, in the light of finding that in times gone by, gentlemen would remain in the dining room whilst they relieve themselves in order to keep the conversation going, I think that you should take the opposite approach from your current thinking. It is so often the case with old houses that the best option contravenes popular thinking and modern methods. So instead of soundproofing, you should build a conversation hatch between the cloakroom and the dining room. That way you can converse with your guests whilst you spladoosh!
Seriously though, I did once buy, for a first floor flat, some rubber matting to go under a floating floor. It was made from recycled car tyres and was only about 10mm thick. It's purpose was more to stop the noise from clattering of the floor timbers against the concrete than from airborne noise, and I'm sure it wouldn't be thick enough to serve your purposes but I just thought I'd mention it.

You could always go for the approach at one place I worked at a student many years ago. An engineering works, one of the offices was a Portakabin, at one end of which was the only ladies toilet on the whole site. The wall between the loo and the office was very thin - whenever one of the girls went in there, they used to run both taps in the sink to hide any noise!

Maybe instead of soundproofing the wall you could soundproof at source. Strategic use of loo roll can deaden the sound, or for a more long term approach a composting loo?

Loo roll is also quite good for preventing splash back.

During each necessary toilet break you could always have an interlude and pre-occupy your guests with these. If you do it everytime someone goes (including yourself) they will never know and just see it as a courteous way of entertaining while someone is away from the table :wink:
