British army jargon I believe:
Bundhook: Rifle (from a very similar word, probably arabic, picked up somewhere in the near east. Not much used today but would have been current back in the WW2 era. These days 'gat' is still quite common).
As for the compost - it's not the nettles which worry me but the rats which seem to like the warmth.
