We were quite lucky that the pub was updated with a new alarm system a few months before it closed. It is a pity they surface mounted the wiring. Interconnected alarms (wired or wireless) are very worthwhile in a big old house with thick walls - if one alarm goes off they all do.
On the subject of fire a large workshop was gutted up the road this afternoon. There were a large number of fire engines and the road has been closed all afternoon.

So, it would be an improvement if the alarm incorporated a little heater to keep the battery warm. I suppose the Period version would be some sort of spirit lamp.
