The trouble with the clip on type monitors is that they have to calibrated correctly for voltage - and when the voltage changes....

Nor do they take power factors into account which can be significant for things like heat pumps. Having said that, the one I borrowed for a while was within 10% of the correct figure which surprised me somewhat.
