what is it…?
This appears to be possibly bone, carved very accurately with two near circular holes, one straight through possibly to pivot, the other at the end about 30mm straight into the body.
There are markings and a few intentionally carved notches.
Context: it was in the rubble section of our plinth stone wall, near the top just under the sole plate.
The building was originally a wool barn most probably, turned into a dwelling around 1600. Originally it was on staddles with a suspended timber floor before the plinths were built.
I’m curious if this is a tool related to the wool trade, but we don’t know whether the barn had some wool industry going on internally or purely strange.
Either way, the working theory is the plinth wall was built when it was turned into a dwelling, so unlikely to be there while still a utility building.
