I have wondered whether the stone surround is sufficiently low where it cloaks the lintel. It appears that the smoke entering the room is hitting the lintel and "bouncing" into the room. If the surround had been made six inches deeper at the front, it is possible that the surround would act as a hood.

Why not try taping a piece of board across the top of the surround. That should show if you have enough draft. I was told that to maintain a draft, the area of the fireplace opening should be no more than eight times the area of the chimney.

We had a baxi open fire once ('burnall' was the model I think) and air was fed into the the bottom of the fire through pipes leading to the outside of the house. This was a very good arrangement as there were no draughts yet the fire could draw as much fresh air as it needed.

Probably not an ideal solution for this particular problem, but I thought it might be useful for anyone considering a new fire.

Yes, we inherited one of those. It used the existing ventilation vent under the floor for the supply, which meant a very damp and dank underfloor indeed.

It would have been more helpful to have mentioned that in the first place, instead of giving the impression that Baxi fires cause damp problems.
