I must admit I've used the same technique on occasion as Noj and, being a pack-rat unwilling to throw anything useful away, I have several strips of softwood, of varying lengths up to 30cm each with 8mm holes at various distances from one end taking up space in one of my tool-boxes. Lord knows why I keep them as I'll just make another if the need arises.
One further thought. Before you buy the skirting check the depth of the variation between the lowest and highest point of the floor. A mate of mine in the distant past failed to do that and only found out part way through the job that he was having to cut away more than half of every board he came to use.I'm going to have to get my compass out and find a good youtube video, I'm thinking its going to be difficult keeping the individual boards all the same height.
