Skimming Plasterboard with Lime

If your plasterer covers the plasterboard completely with a good coat of thistle board finish , as you would for skimming board work, then complete the skimming process with lime plaster (instead of gypsum). the Gypsum board finish sticks to the board and the lime gets pulled in with the gypsum so as you have a lime finished plastered ceiling which will match the rest of the plaster work. DG27 works but it takes ages for the lime to pick-up as there is little suction. One -Coat plaster should not be used on plasterboard (especially ceilings) as it is not compatable and will blow (fall off).

Mixing Gypsum with lime is a well established practice (those Victorians again), called gauging and is done to amke the lime set quicker, as a pozzilan would and does indeed set the plaster harder

P.S Lime and plasterboard do not mix so in is essential that the first coat of gypsum completely covers the boards. Also gauged plaster will not work with plasterboard

What makes you say this? is it bitter experience?

I have much experience of both lime and gypsum plaster and could not warrant those comments.

The B G fact sheet http://www.british-gypsum.com/pdf/DS-107-01%20Thistle%20Universal%201%20Coat.pdf clearly specifies it for use on amongst others plasterboard, as indeed I have used it for at least 15 years.

Sorry, I'll stand corrected there, it's just that for years I'd always been told that the only plasters to use on boardwork were Bonding and Board Finish, until of course they brought out Multi-Finish. As with plasterboards I was always told to plaster on the side with the writting, decorate the other as per every plasterer and builder I knew of did, until the manufacturers decided to write on the boards "Plaster Other Side Only". Also there may be a bit of prejudice, since I've never been a big fan of One-Coat so never really took much notice of it.

you could also replace your ceiling with "Plain Face" and copy your cornice to match existing...£5k seems rather excessive...
we have copied whole houses for less in the past
