I'm not sure if it's any consolation to you, but we had one wall of our house repointed last year. (It had previously been repointed rather badly in cement, leading to damp inside the walls blowing the paint off)
The wall had to have a fair few spalled bricks replaced. One area of around 3' x 2' of the 9" wall had all the external bricks removed and the ones on the "inside" looked pretty ropey, but the house is still there!
(We hav noticed some fine cracks around wall/ceiling joints, but these are no more than 1mm and haven't moved since just after the work was completed)
