The entire saga just reinforced my view that there really is no accounting for taste.
A listed property, on the at-risk register, amazing commitment, detailed consultation during the design and implementation, fanatical attention to detail, no real expense spared, everything seemed to go reasonably smoothly considering the scale of the project, building saved from likely destruction and now fit for another few hundred years. They did everything by the book.
And yet, it didn't engage me one little bit. I was already thinking 'office space' or 'retail showroom' even before Kevin McCloud mentioned 'visitor centre'. I really thought it was one of the most un-homely buildings I've seen in a long time.
Still, that's what personal choice is all about and the project wasn't for my benefit so my opinion isn't really relevant - or shouldn't be. Indeed, I really, sincerely, hope the owners are very happy; they deserve to be after such an impressive project. But, wow - all that money and effort and skill and commitment . . . .
