What does the vendor say the pipe is?
If it is for Radon then the work may already have been done(there should be an area under the floor to collect it). If you test and you have a high radon reading still then you put a fan on the pipe to draw the radon out.

I'd need to have a seance to ask the previous owner! The estate agents don't have much information on what has been done to it. I think I should ask them to find out tomorrow. I've agreed with the agent that if I'm going to make an offer it will be on Friday when I know the outcome of the auction on my current house.

Slight problem there then!

Can you trace the pipe back, if it goes under the floor level and the floor looks fairly recent then it may have a membrane under and a brick constructed collection point. May be building regs would know if the house has had work done. Certianly we have had to put it all into our house but we don't have to actually test it to pass building regs.

Gosh, those tie bars look like they'd pull straight through the wall!!! I might be wrong but they don't look very substantial to me. The one in my house has a 12" disc on either end of it!

I thought that. Until I saw the nuts on the outside I was trying to work out what a water pipe or electrical trunking was doing there! I assume there is something hidden under the render, but where would the other end go?

I think my squint must be having a day off cos I can't see it at all :?

Wow Man it's like totally surreal - I can see a kind of face in the middle of the wall -It's Like a kind bearded man sort of thing - Wow Man - that's crazy!!

- anyway if you take another look at picture - you can see the slight depression in the render around both ties actually - it's def visible as a sort of lightened circular area.

I'm only 35 so eyes still work really well!!!

Hey - just a pointer on the radon thing. I know from past experience that a large multi national lending co (not keen to mention names) use the word 'radon' on all of their survey reports as standard. So if your area appears to be of the millions affected by radon dont panic. Its not hard to fit a radon sump.

I need a laugh at the moment, as making an offer for this house is in the balance. The highest bid at the auction of my current house this morning was £2k short of the reserve, and I'm waiting here with fingers crossed that the auctioneer manages to do a deal with the bidder
