Security arrangements on an outward opening stable door?

We are always having delivery drivers here, some stay at the bottom gate and toot their horn, some phone, the scaffolder is so scard of dogs he doesn't even get out his car at the bottom gate but phone me!!

Most people toot their horn here, too. It's the best way really because it sets the dogs off barking and I know someone's here

We did have one person (in uniform!!) who climbed over the first gate, which was locked, then came through the second gate into the yard...where the dogs were barking frantically. I found this person pinned up against a tree screaming 'Get them off!' :shock: Fortunately, they admitted it was their own fault and my dogs were just doing their job. Phew!!! :roll:

It's extraordinary how scared some people are of dogs. We once had to rescue a huge coalman (with hobnail boots to match) who had been pinned into a corner by my mother's dog - a yorkshire terrier.

I have the locksmith coming round next week to measure up for a lock for my front door. Whilst he's here, I'd like him to take a look at what I need for my back door (the 'everyday' door), which is an outward opening stable door. What sort of locks, latches, catches, bolts etc should I have to make it function properly? Currently it's held shut from the inside with a piece of baler twine from the hinge... Jaqy

Honestly - when I started reading your post I was thinking of suggesting using a bit of baler twine to confuse burglers. Probably as good as any fancy lock. Then I reached your third sentence

Well, you know you can't beat a bit of good ol' baler twine :lol: The amount of things it must have been used for over the years by people, it would make a bloomin' good book!!!

The hinges are bolted on the inside. I appreciate your concern but these cannot be removed from the outside.

How are the other ends of the hinges fixed to the frame? If bolted too, you look ok as it is not possible to life the hinges off the pins. In which case a mortice lock and you're home and dry?

The hinges are bolted through the door and screwed (including hidden screws) into the frame. the doors cannot be lifted off because they sit within the frame. The whole thing is very secure, really I think you're probably right with just a mortice lock...but it needs to look right.

The lock we're having made for the front door will be 12" x 8", encased in wood with metal straps. It's costing a lot but it will look good. I think the one for the back door will need to be something similar.

Hmm, I dunno. I'm beginning to doubt my own convictions since it would be easy to cut through with a hole cutter. Do you think I should disassemble it and put some steel sheet down the middle? But then cutting gear would make mincemeat of it. Maybe I should just brick it up?? Waddya think? :wink:

FF - nice idea; but it won't pass muster with my insurance company. They are insistent on 5-lever mortice locks, and there isn't one in that photo... Bank vault steel door is not in their drop-down menu!
