Chris, I live about 30 minutes north of Austin; commuting distance. Austin food and Tex-Mex are one of the few things I'll miss about Texas when we move to the UK permanently. All my husband can moan about is where we're going to find salsa and pico de gallo in Suffolk.

To be honest, whether it's banksie or anyone else who wields the spray paint can and covers someone else's property without permission, they should have to be responsible either physically or finacially, for getting it cleaned off.
That one in Bristol (http://arts.guardian.co.uk/art/visualart/story/0,,2033422,00.html) is nothing but an eyesore and an expense for the public to get it removed.
Even if it was Picasso who'd done it, it should have been removed.
Buildings, bridges, tunnels, walls vehicles are all damaged and need expensive work doing to them to clear these egotistical scrawls. They are like little kids who cause trouble just to get attention.
Don't encourage them by allowing them to do it on anything.

I hadn't seen that story before - I'm warming to the guy already!

However, I'm with PM regarding unauthorised graffiti, no matter what sort of 'minor genius' the perpetrator might be deemed to be.

In general I agree and I prefer Banksy's "pranks" (there are links to a few others at the side of that BBC story I posted upthread), but I have to admire "Mind the Crap" at the entrance to the Tate during the Turner Prize.

And what about grafitti on the Berlin Wall? context comes into determining its acceptability, I think.

I started a scheme last year to reuse old shuttering ply from central London sites to be used by youth groups in various spots as surfaces for graffiti "pieces" but due to lack of storage and transport issues it only lasted a few months, a shame really as I saw some of the work and it was great (in my eyes anyway) and some of the kids had some real talent.
