Scaffold deals as floorboards?

I have a 1st floor room which is soon to be re-joisted in areas and I will be boarding it out, it is a couple of inches lower than the rest of the 1st floor and I was considering using scaffold deals to do this as they are quite thick, they are also very straight and flat even when left out in fluctuating weather conditions and cheap. I would appreciate your comments regarding this, the room is to be a bathroom.

It's not that interesting - just an old builders plank I found, planed smooth and stuck in the wall over a fireplace. But something strong enough to support a builder is good enough to hold a vase of flowers.

Scaffold planks are pretty heavy things. Will the joists be strong enough to cope?

Over to them as knows....

If screwed in place at every joist and staggered they would also help stiffen the floor structure. Fixing 2x2s on top of existing joists is another possible, which would also stiffen the lot up.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll go ahead with the idea especially after the ringing endorsement from Mr Vernon himself! I share Moo's concern about the increased dead load, in fact given that the same floor will support a bath, toilet, their respective occupants and quite possibly a washing machine perhaps doubling each joist would not be a bad idea.

Wow, I would never have realised how lovely the wood was on old scaff planks. I am now hunting for one for my fireplace.

It's usually best to wait until dark, but make sure that no-one is on a higher level and will need that board to get down. :wink:

There is a somewhat well known story about polished brass. A lady bought some assorted brass items in Bradford and sat them on her mantelpiece. From time to time she would polish them. I forget how she found out, but after decades it was discovered se had in fact been polishing a live bomb. ISTR it being brass and spherical...

Sorry to disappoint, NT, but there is little chance of explosion. This one is hollow, Mari, so doesn't weigh too much on the old scaffold plank. No ashes, Gervase, it contains my postage stamp collection since I got bored with sticking them in an album at about age 12.
