Sash Window Sill Repair

Yeah the cement is definately a bodge. I'm going to fashion a new sill that will extend the full width with slots in like you suggest.

Me too! I have no sash windows, so really shouldn't comment, but in the pictures, the bottom sash seems so far forward that it looks as if it is running in the top sash slot. If you imagine it being a couple of inches back, then the lower sill doesn't look quite so bad.

Yes, as it is now, the lower sash would rest on what remains of the wooden cill. But the cill usually sits flush with the front face of the sash box - so if the upper sash was pulled all the way down, normally it would also be on top of the wooden cill, not in front of it (as it looks like would happen in this case). What Delta says sounds right to me.

that's interesting so looks like i also need to build the sill up higher to come level with ledge the bottom sash sits on? that'll be one mighty thck sill....i wonder if originally there was a slightly bigger window.

and now all is clear...one of the windows has been cut down at some point. and the top piece of wood added to accommodate the smaller window. When down, the top (slightly larger) window sits below the bottom one so that they are level along the top edge. Seems obvious now but having not played around with sash windows before i wasn't sure where everything was supposed to be.
