As I recall he was frighteningly aggressive to nearly all innocent queries/posts.

Try Travis Perkins for a range of sash weights that might fit.

Londonman, thanks. I couldn't see anything connected to counterweights on the Travis Perkins web site. But in any case, when I looked at what I had to do to fix the problem properly, I decided that we'll live with a badly balanced sash. We haven't really minded it to much over the last 20 years. I had thought I would 'do the job properly', but I've since thought better.

It has been suggested to me to make my own lead weights. Sounds like fun, if not a little risky without the right precautions and reserach before hand.
