Rot in window sill - replace or repair?

It would certainly be good to let the wood dry out as much as possible, after you've made sure that your hair slide ( :roll: ) has extracted as much of the rotted stuff as possible. You then need to treat with anti-rot and (probably) with wood hardener.

Ultimately, however, the way that you repair is a matter of exactly where the hole is, and how feasible it is to splice in a new piece of timber, and so on.

Good morning my dearest Mr P: thank you for this and I'll post pics when I've worked out how to recharge the camera.

I believe the hole is splicable, but sadly my chief carpenter (dad) and I have had a fundamental difference of opinions regarding working on period properties and he has withdrawn his help. I don't blame my poor dad, I know I'm impossible now you've intoduced me to the world of Grinling Gibbons.

Anyway I'm pleased you say leaving it open will do no harm, as this is very likely what will happen until I've mastered some basic splicing skills.

Just so long as it's on the inside, and won't get wet. That is correct, isn't it?

Yes it's on the inside. I have enough unwanted holes on the outside.

It's all very well for you to say plug it in, but there are even more unidentifiable leads here than there are insects. I'd probably find that I set fire to the electric blanket via a router through the Scype to Barclays Bank or something.
