?? I know LoL and SWALK but anything else baffles me!
I did buy a large toolbox once and said 'if it fits in that you can keep it in the house', a month later you couldn't see the tool box for hammers, crowbars, tubes of sealant, bags of nails, screws and other bits and very important bobs....I've given up and let the ducks come inside to nibble on his bits now, Lol!!

Having a mate to do demos and to answer silly questions was very very useful.

So true. My project wouldn't have even started without the experienced help and support of someone here on PPUK, and since it started he's been a frequent visitor to help me out and put me on the right track. It's hard to describe the added confidence that such a 'safety-net' can provide.

Looks great! Puts me to shame - I've been looking at a patch on the bathroom wall where the modern gypsum skim has parted company with the lime plaster underneath since we moved in 3 years ago, thinking "I must plaster that one day....."

Actually, carefully not shown in the first picture, is that the other window doesn't have any curtains up. We have the curtains but no rail to put them on as yet. All you really need is a sheet nailed to the window as per the picture above. Works fine ;-)

I once went round to the house of the (single, male) buyer for curtains, blinds, curtain poles etc once for one of the major DIY chains - he had bin bags and dust sheets at his windows of his house, where he'd been living for over a year! And this was a man who got sent free samples of all the items needed every working day!

This room is block construction with a cement render then plastered. Unfortunately, the cement render wasn't scratched nor plastered straight after it was applied when originally built. This meant that the plaster when applied, flash dried and didn't bond to the cement render. It was held in place with wood chip wallpaper and it pretty much fell off the wall as we took the wallpaper off. It didn't give us much option about having to replaster.

Sounds like the cement render should have been PVA'd to kill the suction before it was plastered. Applicable to modern cavity construction / blockwork internal walls only before anyone shoots me for mentioning PVA on this forum ! Bad stuff for traditional building methods, stops breathability.

In my case it's a modern gyspum plaster skim over the original lime plaster, done by a previous owner. Commonly done (in fact still done by many ) but a bad idea - no breathability problems in my case as it's an internal wall, but it just doesn't stick very well and the skim tends to part company with the original plaster eventually.

I sympathise with the woodchip, my last house had every single room done in woodchip and generally that too was the only thing holding the plaster in place.

The wall was scored and PVA'd before the new plaster was put on. Agreed this is not a good idea for an old wall but this one was modern. According to my mate, there is still a risk of PVA causing problems on modern wall as well if there is a lot of moisture in the cement underneath. Come summer, it can push the PVA and plaster off as the moisture can't escape through the PVA.
