Room Finished Finally

Ok so this is probably of little interest to anyone but my wife and myself and the room is only 40 years old so doesn't count as a period property. However, after 9 months in a caravan and 9 months in a tent in the living room, we have finally finished one of the bedrooms and can move back in to a proper bed.

Ceiling and 3 walls have been replastered, 4th wall has been rebuilt, rerendered and replastered, the electrics have been replaced (with help from a PPUK member) and the floor replaced.

To say we are pleased is an underestimate.
(Sorry about the windows, we can't afford to get them replaced at the moment)

I never heard such nonsense - you know we are an avid pack of vultures just waiting to be fed titbits of house - and well done you!!! You must feel so deservedly proud. Did you do the plastering yourself? So neat!

A lovely, calm room, and that floor is beautfiul.

I did do the plastering myself and it won't win any awards but most people think it is good enough. It isn't an easy job though (especially the ceiling).

The floor has turned out great. Somebody here put me on to Osmo Polyx as a finish and it gets my vote. Its rather expensive but you need so little it goes for miles and apparently wears well.

We do need a door, lampshade and some pictures to go on the wall though.

Its so crisp and clean. I really do like the floor, wish mine looked that good.

as my first job...

It took me 8 hrs of very hard work. My plastering mate, who gave a lot of advice and demonstrations in other parts of the house, said it would have taken him 2 to 3 hrs.

I didn't get too much on the floor..

(the doors were used to raise the floor level to make life a lot easier)

You can see the old and the new caravan in the background. We were forced out of it when it was -2 deg C inside and everything including the dogs water bowl froze.

Tent in the living room. We still have a lot to do.

The floor has underfloor heating installed so it was nice and comfy.

Me too. And as a first job too - you certainly don't mind a challenge! I'm planning to (hopefully) get to grips with rendering/plastering at some stage of our project but I've never set my sights on even considering a ceiling. Brilliant job.

Now, can I please print your post about the caravan and tent.....it might persuade my wife that living without curtains (because I haven't put the poles up) is really no hardship compared to what some people go through :wink:

My first two attempts at rendering ended up being scrapped off - well the second lot did, the first lot did it by itself. I had the mix too dry and was putting it on too thick, though I had to get my mate around to show me the correct way to find this out. My third attempt was fine - in fact I would call it easy compared to plastering. Having a mate to do demos and to answer silly questions was very very useful.

Carefully positioned for artistic purposes when you move dust from one place in the house to other places in the house...

My wife has asked me to post the following picture of the hat as well. She seems to have a problem with me leaving the odd tool around, but hey, doesn't everyone have router table and a saw table (out of shot) in the middle of their dining room?

I guess we still have some work to do. Upstairs isn't any better.

Actually, carefully not shown in the first picture, is that the other window doesn't have any curtains up. We have the curtains but no rail to put them on as yet. All you really need is a sheet nailed to the window as per the picture above. Works fine ;-)

If you just pinch up that top section another 8 inches and use bulldog clips at each corner you'd actually create some very good swags and tails there. :wink:

It's always inspiring to see your pics MdB, and yes, tools materials everywhere - it's very much the in look!

I agree with you about the Osmo, it goes for miles.

MdB - how could you think this is boring news?! I know exactly how you felt on the first night in your house - happy and proud don't begin to describe the feeling!

I still have absolutely vivid memories of moving into our first fixer-upper house, after four years in a caravan. Just wonderful.

The room looks really lovely - simple, fresh and clean.

By the way, how on earth do you manage with only a router table and a saw table in the living room? No spindle moulder, morticer, pillar drill, thicknesser....? Now that's what I call Spartan living.

Unfortunately, it looks like I am allergic to rosin so sawdust gives me all sorts of eye problems. I thought it was just pine but it looks like oak does the same thing.

I said "so pleased they've finally got a lovely bedroom to move into after camping indoors." Mr M said "how did they peg the tent down?" sigh.... (I think he secretly thinks it looks rather cosy and is thinking of trying it out in our house)

Excellent, lovely pics and well done on the plastering, something I've not managed to master, but hey, kitchen just about finished and bedroom started, chimney bricks replaced and repointed, hopefully next week will see the start of putting in kitchen untis and ensuite!!!!

I've been living with those in my kitchen for 4 years now & everytime I 'tidy' them away I get a slap on the wrist for 'hiding' things. Why oh why when theres a 2 storey workshop at the end of the garden? :evil:

SWMBO keeps "tidying away" (aka "losing") my tools to the outbuildings.... consequently I can never find anything and have to keep buying new stuff. If would be far cheaper to let me keep frequently used tools (all of those on Penners' list, and then some) in the house. :roll:
