THanks Flyisher. The pitched ones look good, but I don't reckon the flat one looks any better than what I've got.
ANyway, the flat roof itself wasn't really what I was asking about. Since I couldn't get Planning to let me put a pitch on it, and I'm stuck with the flat roof if I want a kitchen and bathroom, I've put a little tiled bonnet on the front so you can't see it from the front, and there it is.
It was just the sloping upstand on the chimney that I was asking about.

PS, I'm surprised nobody's thought of calling the tradesman back and asking him to make good of the job. I think he'd agree the chimney element isn't his best work.

Yes, it's not great. But, the main thing is that it's waterproof, so I agree with those who say leave it and put something over the top. Tiles would probably be the easiest - if you lead it, you'll have to cut a stepped flashing down the side of the wall somehow.

I cut it off. Finished the top of it in lead, and will finish between the chimney and the house in lead.

I did the horizontal flashings. The roofer did the step flashing down the side of the chimney.

Henry's not afraid of heights. Last summer I took him on my back to the top of the chimney so that he could clean out the mortar joints while I repointed. He loved it! People in the pub garden nearby were very amused.
No, the reason he wasn't in that picture is that he goes to Spanish evening classes on a Tuesday.
