I like to listen to my favorite 1961 WBG Decca recording of ''classic washing machine noises and fridge noises'' but if there is a washing machine or fridge on at the time it simply spoils the realism.

I have had many long arguments about speaker cables, hi-fi mains cables, gold-plated plugs and the rest over the years.
Quoting Ohm's law and doing the sums, calculating frequency response from 5 Hertz to 100 kHz and all the rest carried no weight. The protagonists don't want to be bothered with such stuff. They just know it's right. They can hear the difference between woven oxygen-free stranded cable and 2.5 mm T&E speaker leads. Or they think they can.

I did repair a very expensive FM tuner for one of them. The manufacturer had gone bust, and none of the shops he went to would touch it. I told him he would be doing the soldering and deciding yes/no to each step. The problem was that it would forget the memory presets as soon as it was powered off. The memory was a chip powered from a 1 Farad capacitor, charged to 5 volts off the 12 volt line. I'd never seen 1 F before! The cause, I think, was the current inrush through the dropper resistor frying said resistor if it hadn't been used for a few days. The 1F was also leaky (didn't go over about 10k indicated resistance even after a long time on my test meter).

We fitted four rechargeable AA cells instead, in a carrier mounted on the back. I told him when it started forgetting again, replace the cells. It's still in use, connected with very expensive phono leads. He's happy.
