I must confess to not having a copy of Wainwright though, which probably brands me as the enemy straight away. He wasn't that big in Norfolk though, was he? Anyway, walking boots I can do, so maybe I'll get away with it.

All that flyfishing gear will no doubt help endear you as a man of the countryside, whereas me and my gun on shoulder probably wouldn't go down to well inspecting a ROW :shock:

The days of being able to shoot the locals for straying onto your land are long gone, I suspect. The country is truly going to the dogs.

I wrote that with my tongue firmly in my cheek, then I remembered that farmer chappie who was jailed for shooting a couple of persistent thieves, so not so funny really. I think that was in Norfolk

If people are taking the easy route, then if you make the "official" route easy for them, I can't believe anyone will be upset - particularly if the easy route becomes the one that the fingerpost points to.

If you want to make the fence animal-proof, to allow herds of wildebeest to roam your plains, you could always include a stile in the fence.

Actually, I'm not sure that stiles are allowed these days - disability access and all that. I've seen some horrendous looking 'kissing gates' on footpaths that are clearly designed for wheelchairs, so I'm loathe to put anything across the footpath without express approval from the RoW people. I will talk to the RoW person about it when they come out though.

Meanwhile, I've asked my supplier to hold off on the Wildebeest delivery until the field really is stock-proof.

Funny you should find that link from Herts CC, Nemesis, because that's where I've seen a horrendous 'kissing gate' - all galvanised and gleaming.
