Back on topic - are you doing something with the top part - like install metal curved cheeks, or shape it a bit, or what?

Thank you for the comments on the Morini - its for sale, if anybody is interested. Much better than a Ducati! I shan't comment on Lambrettas.
We wont use this that often, as it will be a dining room, and will require me to make a real fire.
We weren't going to install metal cheeks and were thinming of the render instead. There isnt any sign that the cheeks were tiled.
The bricks form a slightly concave throat but the builders void is pretty rough.
Iron curved cheeks might be a good idea - but would need to find a good blacksmith.

Cast curved cheeks were often fitted, ours has them - reeded - you may be able to find some. It may be trial and error to get the fire to draw too.
I'd use fire cement too, and firebricks - it will last longer that way.

motorcycles aside........ my previous house had a similar set up in a bedroom.... rough 'forming' brickwork with lime/sand/hair over.... very friable. as permeability is not an issue here, i would go as far to say that a compo mortar - including (eek) sulphate resisting cement (apologies for the 'c' word) would be fine..... even - going on from previous post - a compo mix including an amount of vermiculite.... from my experience, the fire drew well once warmed..... best 'kick started' hee hee with some softwood kindling prior to coal.
