I'm considering restoring an original art nouveau fireplace (or perhaps late victorian?).
Anyway, the pattern is cast iron and is part of and stands about 5mm proud of the actual main fireplace. I've been mildly succesful in reviving this but as you can imagine there are decades of soot/grime/tar which which has accumulated. This is proving difficult to shift and I'm reluctant to use a strong detergant or abrasive.
However, I would be grateful if anyone can offer some good advise.
