Restoration glass - alternative suppliers/approaches?

Glass should be easy to extract if the sash frames can be destroyed.

Hopefully I should be getting a few old windows from a house round the corner, if the builders save them for me. If there is lots, you are welcome to what I don't want Paul!

I am going to try and save some old sashes from a house that is being ruined on the next rd from mine. The problem is I am always home from work well after the builders have done their worst and anything good is smashed in the skip. I missed an original pine fire surround the other day

Have you not thought of leaving them a note, asking for stuff, or leaving your number and to call you?

I do it all the time, I've had a chat with 2 sets of builders that are vandalising houses at the moment. One set refused to give me the windows, but the others say they will save them for me. Makes me realise what will happen to my place if I sell it

If they know there is someone nearby who wants stuff they will probably be quite happy to do a deal. They don't usually get very much money for stuff at a salvage yard and they have to transport it there. The alternative is it takes up space in the skip. Only if they have an interest in it for themselves or another job would they probably be a bit more reluctant.

When one of the other apartments in our mansion block was renovated ( by some young developers with no thoughts of conservation whatsoever ) they re roofed their corner of the building and my builder brokered a deal for the old slates to go to someone he knew that wanted them. He was quite happy with a little finders fee. Sadly we didn't know at the time that they would also be junking the beautiful and original front door, complete with original brass letter plate etc. I went to great effort and expense to have one made for our place, even matching the door furniture after hours searching salvage places online. I assumed nobody would be stupid enough to get rid of an original if they had it. I was wrong. One of the last things they did was to put in a horrible modern thing with no lovely panels and a big chrome knob in the middle. Luckily because it is the other end of the building I don't have to see it unless I visit my neighbor. The management committee changed the rules after that and you are now no longer allowed to replace the door to the common areas without permission, and getting rid of an original door wouldn't be allowed.

£7k is eye watering, but I agree with you that it looks so much better than modern glazing not just from the outside where you don't get that mirror effect, but also from the inside. Because we always intended to go for Tatra glass, we never did the price comparison. All I can say, is we have no regrets as the windows have transformed the look of our house. £7k is quite a bit of glass for a small firm like Tatra so might be worth negotiating if the other suppliers suggested here can't help.
