Repairs to central heating fitted in 1915

I've refurbed many old items simply by taking them apart with care, nothing how they work, repairing the damaged parts, replacing bits if need be and reassembling. Valves arent rocket science. I doubt you'd even need a lathe.NT

A list of the parts that didn't need replacing would probably be shorter than a list of those that did. You would not be able to get spare parts.

The valve body would have suffered wear. A good quality valve (Crane, Pegler, etc., ) would be as good, or better than the 90 year old valve was when new, and it would cost less than having just one small part fabricated.

I have a lathe and I've had valves refurbished. I would replace them if at all practical.

As part of my job I visit lots of schools - including a number that were built around 1910-1920 which all still have central heating systems as you describe. They must still be servicing and repairing them.

If you do not get anywhere you could always try the county council maintainence dept who may be able to give you some leads for a reputable and relaible person to fix your valves.

P.S. If you got for a 24v conversion for your sockets the possibilities for appliances are vastly increased past table lamps - the Army landrovers all run off 24v electrics rather than 12v for civilian ones so that they can support all sort of military equipment - same goes for tanks and armourged vehicles.

And my lathe, sir, is controlled by integrated circuits. It had an AC motor driving a DC generator, to allow speed control of the final drive DC motor. The AC motor/DC generator bit packed up & I found a DC speed controller used for conveyor belts.

I think the traditional retort for these situations is; "Nah nah ne nar naaaaah!"

I think the schools had evolved a method of sizing TRVs, something like 1" on ground floor, 3/4" on 1st floor, 1/2" on 2nd floor and above. or was it the other way around? I have the technical memorandum somewhere. Such amendments were/are routine for a competent pipe fitter.
