A friend lives in a "plasterboard palace" (his words), he keeps a set of different size screwdrivers for poking holes in walls to fix things - no need for nasty noisy drills! He hates the place, says he can't believe how badly it is built.

All well and good if you're hanging feathers on your wall. But try hanging a kitchen wall cabinet (which will, by one of those fundamental laws of nature, be loaded up with your heaviest kitchen equipment) on just plasterboard fixings.

You'll have a new floor-standing cabinet in no time.

Agreed, plasterboard covered stud partitions are a complete pain, the "nasty noisy drills" comment wasn't meant seriously! I helped a family member fit a kitchen in a modern place a while ago, we ended up removing the plasterboard across the area where the wall cabinets were to sit and replacing it with ply, screwed to the studs, so we could fix the cabinets to the ply. Even then we put battens on the back of the ply in key areas to give more to fix into.

You know how people used to joke that you could see the walls wobble on the set of Crossroads when someone shut a door? I get that feeling in new mass-built houses!

I think the whole idea of food-on-a-stick is quite underdeveloped in this country. There are lots of new possibilities...

Eww.. since the credit crunch, I've been buying my frozen calamari in Lidl not Waitrose and now I'm worrying that I'm eating chunks of that eww..
