Under other circumstances I rather think that a link to his site might be something that you would be usefully providing, as you so often do. Absolutely which is why we need people like Toby and yourself to post. I know absolutely nothing about sanding floors apart from seeing people on the TV hiring an industrial sanding machine, removing 5mm from the surface and going "isn't that lovely" when they have finished.Nemesis said:

I just want to say that - broadly - I'm not trying to disagree with Toby's advice about the pro's and con's of sanding. He's much more of an expert on this than I am.

I do not know how long you have been posting on this forum but as far as I recall you joined after I did.
I have posted several humdred if not more articles on this site and spent several weeks producing pieces all for free.
I regularly give advice to people from this forum who email me directly from around the world.
The advice I have given would have cost thousands of pounds if I charged by the hour.
I do this because I come from a long line of wood restorers and I am passionate aboute wood and period buildings (and furniture of course)
I think before you state such strong points as you have in the way you have you should perhaps sit back and think a little bit.
I am not saying people are wrong, infact I am saying that it is possible to use a particular technique, which in my experience is the most efficient and kindest to the wood and passing that on to the person who posed the question. The fact is using a chemical caustic stripper, perhaps which would be recomended by the certain company mentioned would damage the floor. The advice I give is the best I can offer given my time reading Materials Engineering and 20 years worth of practical knowledge, this may or may not be correct but I try and help especially where people seem to be confused and it is an area that I have quite a bit of experience in.
As far as the advertising goes you should really think before you "open your mouth" The person who posed the question has a house in Ireland. I am in London. I have enough work to take me up to Christmas thankyou very much and I am not sure the gentleman would be able to afford to pay me to travel to Ireland to do the job.
As it happens the gentleman phoned me yesterday, thanked me for my help and for the links to my website which he said were very helpful, he even asked if I would be so kind as to consider popping over to Ireland to advise him on how to finish his 5000 square feet of flooring in the most sympathetic way. I said I would consider this.
I am not touting for work, I dont need to. I try and help as much as I can. I have supported this site from the start, I have met Rob Tavendale and even sanded his beams! preserving his warding marks I may add. Rob is a lovely man and refuses to take my money to pay for my little advert even though I keep protesting. I think he does this because he realises that free help and advice from someone who has a real passion for this subject is hard to find from a professional perspective.
I have undertaken jobs from my contacts on this website but I could count them on one hand!!! Not much financial reward for all my effort over the years. I do however greatly enjoy my jobs gained from this site as they are normally in beautiful properties with wonderful wood with customers who are really appreciative and that is important to me.

I understand your concern but I think there are many more obvious felons out there than I. Toby - both David and I have posted to (gently) say we think you stepped over the edge and posted what was bordering on a commercial ad. I think this has been blown out of all proportion however.

John Wood, the architect of Georgian Bath, describes the floors of older houses coloured brown ‘with soot and small beer to hide the dirt’. One contemporary author, Hannah Glass in 1760 instructs the housemaid to first strew handfuls of damp sand over the floor before sweeping it to gather the dust, then scrubbing the boards with the herbs ‘tanzy, mint and balm’ to make them ‘look like mahogony’ and to make the room smell nice. In some houses the floorboards may have been limewashed to keep them looking clean and fresh.'
