Here you go, not content with having an unfinished Kitchen, bedroom, we have started on the lounge and removed our main source of heating.............

Hopefully the contractors will arrive as promised tomorrow to fit the new wood burner with back boiler, buffer tank, solar panels and connect it all together properly

Well done Graham; there's nothing like having all rooms in turmoil. I'll be very interested to hear how your new system performs, it sounds potentially very effective and similar to what I have in mind, although probably without the solar panels initially.

Interesting that you should mention the picture FW, I thought it was standard practice for period property works - we certainly maintained similar standards when repairing our roof: :wink:

It was when our front roof was at the same stage that I had some real regrets about our house being listed. Had it not been, I would have been very tempted indeed to cancel the tile replacement and go for lovely sheets of plate glass. The light was breathtaking.

No they wouldn't. I'd have had the latest quadruple glazing, with the occasional solar panel.

All good so far, they were going to arrive yesterday so they could make an early start, but had a job to finish.
They left Scotland at 2am, arrived at 8.15am and are already starting to put Solar panels up..... make use of all this spring sunshine

I can entirely understand that. When our roof was just covered in tarpaulin the light in the attic was wonderful and the whole space was completely transformed. Not very C16 though.

But I'm now feeling guilty about this digression as I'm so looking forward to reading about progress with Graham's new wood/solar heating system.

Sorry, thought you might let them get on with doing some work before asking for an update

Yesterday.
Rayburn disconnected from system and new pipework put in to get to new buffer tank.
One radiator removed.
20 solar tubes nearly fitted on roof, we're having 50.

I think Jo's glad to be in warm hotel in London for a change, as we had a heavy frost overnight........

Graham, does the buffer tank contain heated water from the various heat sources?

Is there an actual "thing" at the back of a back boiler on the woodburner or just pipes?

Buffer tank - yes. It's like a giant hot water tank. Solar, wood burner and rayburn all feed into it. There is also a hot water tank inside the main tank which supplies the hot water to taps.

A fireplace with a water jacket is a useful device to enjoy being cosy by a traditional fireplace as well as with the aid of a central heating system to heat the entire house. This fireplace is provided with an internal and external jacket; the space between them is filled with ca 40 litre of water.

Would be if I had time to enjoy it, the local youth forum spent some time discussing problems with living in a rural area and what they are doing to overcome these obstacles, with Dr Stuart Burgess, rural advisor to the PM and Thursday sees the launch of the report, so all I'm doing today is fielding phone calls and emails from the press and media who want to talk with the youths, busy busy day!!!!!

Tank is in situ and insulation fitted. All the controls are going in today and the solar panels are being connected to the tank.......... should be warm by Saturday pm.
