I do like Fernicarry's idea of using triple & earth to switches though, as that allows for much more flexibility in the future. Would that be legal to do it that way? Presumably though it would only work for circuits with one switch, as we'd run out of cores if trying to do a 2 or 3 switch circuit?

Oh yes, very common. If you don't need a neutral at the switch,, then three-core allows for a two-gang switch, if the permanent live is shared.

No problem from a regs pov, so long as each core sleeved with correct colour to indicate its use and the neutral safely terminated if not connected. I think Hager switches have an extra terminal for neutral but I'm an MK man so haven't tried them.

True, if you have more than one fitting switched from the same position you will need more cores. In that case I think I'd have a separate T&E heading away from the switch to each fitting rather than several switched lives heading back to the ceiling rose. Would depend on how easy to make the cable runs I suppose.

I use 3+e (with neutral at the switch) for 2 separate luminaires - run from the switches to the first fitting and connect the 1st live and the N, then on to the 2nd fitting and connect the 2nd live and the N. Cuts down on the number of sheaths to get into the switch box and the number of neutrals to be looped.
