Not quite as bad as theft, but I have seen reclamation companies advertising for old buildings to demolish, farm buildings in particular. It's sad to think that there is more profit in taking a building to pieces and selling the bits than in refurbishing and making use of it as it stands.

The farm buildings thing is a problem without a good solution. My firewood guy told me he had the devil's own job with his farm buildings, too small for any of his farm machinery and very expensive to maintain. In the end he managed to get permission to convert into holiday lets but is not allowed to detach the deeds for sale nor allow continuous occupation by a tenant. That works in Suffolk/Norfolk but if you're in a less holiday friendly location then the farmer is faced with an ongoing repair bill for redundant building. At that point it's probably better to have a reputable company remove the materials for restoration of other similar buildings in use than allow the structure to fall down or have the materials robbed away and sold on the blackmarket- not much better, but better all the same in my humble opinion.
