Re-opening Fireplace

I've poked a small hole at the bottom just above the airbrick, and have noticed that there is brickwork at this level running front to back, which appears to be much further towards the centre of the chimney breast than the end of the archway.

I think maybe I should get a builder in to take a look...!

Well that might be the best route, all I'd add is that a standard opening for a fire was designed to be a void so you can be can quite bold with any brickwork below the arch before you take a final decision to call in the cavalry. Either way, good luck.

I've opened up many a blocked fireopening and never had a collapse yet...

Proceed with caution, and I'm sure all will be fine.
