We're moving house shortly, and Mrs P is spending a fair amount of time wandering around the house saying, "How come it never looked this good before we decided to sell?"

We also left behind a very new (and fab) shower room and a brand new bathroom - we finished it the day we moved out. I still wonder if the bath was comfortable or not.

Ouch! Not quite as bad, we put up with an exceptionally manky 70's kitchen & bathroom in the last house for 7 years - then I did them both in a year, and we really went to town with them, being in the DIY retail business meant I bought & scrounged lots of very nice fittings etc, which whilst nice did nothing to the value of the house. Within 6 months we'd left!

Hindsight being the wonderful thing that it is I could have put in something more basic, much more quickly, that would have made the house just as easy to sell.

Mind you, I was putting the cornice and pelmet on the kitchen units the day before we left. And finishing grouting the floor tiles.

I'm glad it's not just me! Gives me some defence with Mrs F !

Penners, I have a couple of DIY-phobic friends who both bought houses less than 20 years old that looked immaculate inside, on the basis that they wouldn't have to do a thing. Of course once the keys were handed over and they saw the now-empty house they instantly realised that you could see all the marks where the pictures and furniture had been.

Well, we both have mixed feelings about leaving this lovely house. But we're moving to be closer to grandchildren, and have found a really nice house to buy in a lovely rural location. So the regrets will be shortlived.

There's a lot to be said for that Penners. We loved our old house, but we moved closer to family once our kids came along and we don't regret it for a second. We were over 4 hours away before, the kids saw their grandparents every 3-4 months at best.

We're still not exactly on the doorstep - 1/2 hour and an hour away respectively - but it's close enough that we can go round just for an hour or 2, which suits everyone. The grandparents are certainly getting a lot out of it.

Ah yes - an important consideration, Feltwell. Mrs P wanted us to move as close as possible to the grandchildren, but fortunately I managed to negotiate that out to 25 minutes away.

We'll be close enough to be able to pop over easily for tea, but not so close that the door opens daily and daughter's voice calls, "Just leaving them with you for a couple of hours while I go shopping"!

It works both ways - we wanted to be far enough away so that "We were passing and just thought we'd pop in" wasn't really an option, they & us both have to ring and arrange the visit first!

Ahh, the user Worms on here did used to have their location shown as Ultima Thule, I've just remembered.

Good grief - my silly jokette seems to have spawned a great deal of speculation! And, just to clarify the issue for the future, in any situation where Penners might be making an obscure but vaguely intellectual reference, or just being silly, it's always safer to assume the latter.

Feltwell said he wanted to be far enough from grandchildren to ensure that "popping in" wasn't possible. I therefore suggested Ultima Thule as ideal for this purpose.

Our old forum mate, Worms, lists his location as Ultima Thule. If you'd clicked my link you'd have seen that both the Greeks and the Romans used versions of this term for a place in the far north, and it became an almost mythical location that was beyond the known world - as far north as it was possible to be.

I expect you've all nodded off now.
