Though it's Flintshire's County Hall now, I think it was built as the offices for Clwyd county council, covering the whole of north east Wales.

Poor old Council-Tax payer I agree - this is very poorly administered county. However, it certainly isn't the smallest in the UK - it isn't even the smallest in Wales. According to the 2001 Census returns, National Statistics put the Flintshire population at 148,565 making it the 6th largest of Wales' 22 Local Authorities.

Of course, why a population of just 3m needs 22 local authorities and the Great Parish Council in Cardiff (and a whole "national" infrastructure) for a population about the same size as the West Midlands is another question entirely!

Have just seen on the Council's website that 8000 people work for them- that's over 5% the Flintshire's population work for local government!

This is a small serviced office building on Kings Cross Road, London WC1X. It is an infill building between a victorian block of flats and a church.

I have to say I really like the contrast, and how the mental sheeting runs at an angle to accentuate the angled roof. So for me: Pretty.

Here's one of my favourite public buildings of the last 100 years:

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre, opened in 1932, was the first major public building in Britain to be designed by a woman architect. Her name was Elizabeth Scott. Actually, IMO its front entrance is even better than this riverside view, but can't be satisfactorily photographed because it's constantly obsured by cars in the car park.

I suspect that a little bit of my affection for the building is coloured by a lifetime's enjoyment of wonderful Shakespeare productions there. John Gielgud as Prospero, both Laurence Olivier and David Warner as Hamlet, Ralph Richardson as Bottom, Leslie Phillips as Falstaff, Diana Rigg as Titania, etc, etc. Wow...!

Which makes me wonder: how much of one's affection or hatred of a building is the result of one's personal experiences of it?
