PPUK Christmas Thread

Well, we normally have a Christmas thread round about this time. One year I seem to remember we did a 12 days of Christmas ditty, and another year we did "For PPUK Christmas I would like..."

How about a Poster of the Year competition this year - anyone can vote... but first we need a few categories - some serious and some not so?

I hope this won't exclude those who've been PPUKers for less than a year - indeed we've had a great many newcomers this year with great projects and great advice. I hope they wil all join in with the "old-timers"

Can I suggest for starters:

Most Helpful Poster;
Most Welcoming to newcomers;
Most patient poster (awarded for prodigious responses to "Help my survey says I've got damp/worm/poltergeists" posts)

And to get you all going thorugh the archives, how about:

Best post of the year.
Funniest post of the year.
Most irrelevant post of the year
Best picture.

What about some others?

Most irrelevant poster goes to Fred Drift- we haven't seen him lately? There's a core of regular posters on here who are consistently helpful, patient, funny and kind as well as knowledgeable, the forum is lucky to have them, as well as all the other expertful and just experienced people who drop in with little nuggets of wisdom when they have time. It's a great resource.

Talking of the price of fish, we're having beef for Easter lunch. Unless of course they find the Higgs or Boson particle first, in which case we'll either be able to travel thyme (Higgs) or disappear up our own fundament (Boson).

Hmmmm, for category of "Most Helpful Poster" I would like to nominate anyone who has ever expounded ( sensibly ) on the intricacies of solving electrical problems ( I can remember threads on how to revitalise batteries, how to check internet speeds and solve various other computer issues, as well as many "house wiring" related ones ). It helped me realise 1) that the electricians bill was money very well spent and 2) it's OK to press buttons various on the laptop in hope something may solve a problem.

I have to say I half expected Joce to jump in here and reiterate (before someone said something to the contrary) that chickens and other fluffy like things are never irrelevant on PPUK and should probably have their own permanent thread.

I haven't been on PPUK for even a year yet so the archive for me is limited, however, I would say that the funniest for me so far was 'Period Wasps'. I could relate to all of it. I can't recall though whether it was this thread that started off following Joce's unfortunate experience or someone else's. Sorry for digging up bad memories!

It's good to see Fred Drift is still lurking. I'd say his contribution to the cohesiveness of PPUK is largely unsung as he helps keep things ticking over between the nitty gritty period property issues. As for Poster Of The Year, based on sentiment and elegant simplicity, my vote would go to the following:

Most Helpful Poster of the Year?

Comparisons are invidious. But, amid all the highly credible candidates for that honour, I think my vote would go narrowly to Flyfisher. His own learning curve, in the immense restoration job that he took on a few years ago, has been well nigh vertical. But not only has he coped with this outstandingly competently, but he has always taken huge trouble to pass on to others the facts, information, knowledge and opinion that he has formed over the span of his project (and of course in his previous professional life).

It's perhaps worth adding that, before he commenced his project, I went over to look at the house with him. When I saw the scale of the job that needed doing and learned the extent of his budget, I think I was pretty unequivocal in telling him that I wouldn't consider taking on that immense task on that modest budget!

How wrong can you be?!

As for Most Irrelevant Poster, modesty forbids me from proposing... ahem...

Not bad memories, all very funny now time has blurred the pain. And a permanent thread on the fluffs- what an excellent idea! Mme Croquembouche, one of thr French Copper Black Marans, came into lay today; she lays huge mahogany coloured eggs so this a great Christmas treat. And my new cockerel Georgie ( a beautiful gold laced Orpington large fowl) is just developing his lovely red wattles. Thought you'd all want to know. :wink:

I have to confess that I am making no effort foodwise for the festive season, the chefs at the Shangri-La hotel will, I hope, be doing a splendid job on my behalf. However for anyone who fancies trying something that is probably horrid, but possibly wonderful I give you "chocolate covered brussels sprouts"

I hesitate to single any one person out for particular merit - as everyone who responds, even if only occasionally or just for amusement value, is making a contribution that can be valuable to someone else. So on that sickeningly-PC note, I thank you one & all !

One of the Royal Institution Christmas lectures (see, on topic!) talked about the most effective calorific foods for polar exploration with the aid of some scouts to sample their delights.
IIRC vegetable oil was the most efficient way to carry the energy needed to conquer the poles but none of them looked that keen on glugging down 1.5 litres of the stuff.
Now if they've encapsulated it in gelling agent (a la molecular gastronomy), breaded, then deep fried it...
