Posting pictures....

What's all this about photobuckets and images-- have I missed something here? Could do with finding out how to post an image. The other half always seems to fall asleep when I ask him to show me how to put one on PPUK.

OK Jocelyn - here's a very inexpert potted explanation.

Before you can post an image here, you need to upload it to one of the many free image storage websites. For example, have a look at: http://photobucket.com/.
Once you have registered with Photobucket, you can upload images from your computer to Photobucket. Then when you want to include one of those uploaded images in a post here, visit your images in Photobucket - underneath you'll see a choice of three identification tags for each image. Click on the one in the "Img" box and then click CTRL+C.

Go back to "Post a reply" in PPUK and click CTRL+V and your image details will be included in your reply, complete with the correct IMG and /IMG tags to allow PPUK to recognise it as such.

Why not give it a try in the Test Me area of this forum?

You need to register with Photobucket - make sure you tick all the 'no' boxes or you may be inundated with SPAM. Once you do that you will be e-mailed a link to your account. When you access the site turn off the sound on your computer - it's free as the site is full of ads which have annoying noise alongside...

I have a freebie web-based internet account where I register now for such things, not the one I use for important stuff. You will need a user name - not always a good idea to use your own and in fact it may already be registered to someone else - and a password.

If you have images which aren't large stored on your computer I think ImageShack is by far the easiest. The re-sizing image probs I haven't yet got to grips with - see the above, click on my thumbnails, see what you think.

Photobucket - use the size selector or you may find the image displays too large.

Go on - have a go with ImageShack - use the test area. I started a thread as I felt it may help others if we all pitch in with any useful info we have found. Any probs we can all try to help ...

I can't see how to reduce using Picasa, and can't see how to get Picasa up when I press browse... I get my pictures up in the My Pictures part of the computer.

If resizing a photo is a bit of a mystery, there's a wonderful little piece of free software that makes it incredibly easy. It's called Shrink Pic, and you can download it from http://www.onthegosoft.com

It allows you to specify the level of compression you want (as I mentioned to you earlier, I recommend you click "Custom" and then specify 800 x 600 - but you can go smaller if you want to), and it then automatically resizes any picture that you attch to an email or upload to a website, without affecting the original photo on your hard drive. There's even a little patch on the Shrink Pic window where you can drag-and-drop pictures to see what they'll look like when compressed, and there's a short tutorial film included.

I have new software on my new computer and although it's fine as it resizes images for e-mails etc I can't see how to do it for ImageShack without a great deal of palaver. It uploads directly from where my photos are held on My Pictures - and those are stored as large size files, which are as you say going off to ImageShack full size. Great if you want to study the woodworm holes though!

I've looked - but I still think the problem is that it's picking up the original pics from my computer on ImageShack and those are huge.

I need I suppose to resize, save again, then upload those. But I can't see how to do that as yet, with the software I have.

I do tick the re-size box but that doesn't seen to make any difference. I gather that although it displays at first a reasonable size once the thumbnail is clicked, in fact the giant size has downloaded and lurking waiting for the next click. Which is why you are experiencing delays in opening, David?

Back to Photobucket then unless I'm posting pics nicked from elsewhere which are already a reasonable size, unless someone has any other info.

Yes, that must be why. The little downloaded program that I suggested will only work when you originally upload. Once the picture is posted on Photobucket (or anywhere else) there's not much you can do about its size.

You can alter the size at which the picture is displayed quite easily with Photobucket, there's a little bit which asks if you want it 75%, 50% etc, but ImageShack, although it does ask about resizing, seems to upload at full size, display the first screen on clicking on the thumbnail at a reasonable size, but clearly it uploads and then downloads to you the full size, which it then displays when you click a second time. Hence the delays when you first click on the thumbnail. Pity as it is so easy to use.
Sooo.... it seems that resizing of any image has to be done on your own software...

...and then saved on your own computer THEN uploaded to have an effect on ImageShack.

I don't have such software, I simply upload and in general when I send in an e-mail using Microsoft or Picasa it gives me a choice then to resize.

Picasa though I recommend to people - I like the way it displays all my pics and I can browse through.

Free Google download, has no effect on other picture progs you have....

And I should be out picking plums! We have a glut.

Any way of sending them directly from your PC iitself without having to spend web time and phone bills going through something else and getting a screen load of adverts?

Copy/paste doesn't work, drag/drop doesn't work, "send to" won't (not surprising)

Noddy's guide on posting pics is needed rather than the Chinese whisper approach.

Much easier on the old forum, wasn't it :-(

It seems the choice is a pic in the main body of the text via PhotoBucket - for which you have to register, although it's free - or ImageShack. I like the thumbnail idea but the ads I agree are a pain, and it's only obviously useful if the original can somehow be compressed first. I am working on that one...

This one was reduced 50% on Photobucket.

I think a judicious mix of both is required.

Pictures have to be hosted on an external website.

It only takes a few moments once you have got the hang of how to do it... it was getting the hang which took me an age, thank you GK for your help at a distance!

The short answer is "no". You can't post pictures direct from your computer into a post on this forum. Yes - it was a bit easier on the old forum, although even there the extremely small file size limitation meant that directly posted pictures weren't much cop.

Photobucket is my image website of choice. Not much in the way of ads, and you certainly don't get the residual advertising popups that ImageShack can throw at you.

Your "phone bills" remark suggests to me that you're still on a pay-as-you-go account. Have you examined how much you spend on this, and compared these bills with a fixed cost dial-up or (if you can get it) broadband account? When I switched from pay-as-you-go to a fixed monthly charge, I actually saved money.

Until we had Broadband I had a fixed charge pay as you go, and a dedicated phone line. It cost £14.99 a month unlimited access.

Broadband is so much better!

Sad isn't it about ImageShack - the thumbnail idea I really liked, but the ads are annoying.

Photobucket it is then... mostly.

No-one seems to have come up with an alternative.

I know some people put sharing files stuff on if they have a large number of pics to share, but I haven't got that far yet!
