I'd bet we've all had a smoke alarm go off when the toast has burned, a chimney has blown-back or something similar. A deafening alarm is annoying enough in such circumstances but, I think we'd all agree, is an acceptable event for the safety provided. An indoor rainstorm might not be so acceptable.

and we would have to have bathroom type lighting everywhere so we didn't kill ourselves.
