Plaster washers - UK supplier?

Hello all,

I am trying to locate plaster washers, to complete the repair of my ceilings, and cannot find them anywhere in the UK. The ones I am refering to are the perforated washers which are recessed under the surface of the plaster.

I recently saw a post where someone had used these - I think it might have been Biffvernon?. Couldn't find it again though.

Could anyone help with a UK source for these.

I saw that site, and several others. Unless I'm being dense or blind, I can't see any info about sourcing these washers anywhere but the US.

Well we are about to fix our loose plaster back to the wall and I think we will use screws and plain ss washers. (No no jokes about loose screws, loose women, or anything else of that nature...)

I will investigate further however, and maybe it's something that this site might consider sourcing and stocking:

Most ironmongers should stock 'repair washers', about the size of an old penny/2p piece. These are fine for plaster repairs. I even saw some last time I was in B&Q.
Or, for 2p a pop, if you've got a drill press you could make your own from 2p coins!

No, not any lomger.

You can put a piece of UK currency (2p) in a machine at Tower Bridge and have it stamped with a picture of... Tower Bridge.

Yes, I've seen those machines, but I don't think they are strictly legal. They are quite common in the USA, but it's not illegal to deface the currency over there.

Restrictions on melting or breaking of metal coins.— (1) No person shall, except under the authority of a licence granted by the Treasury, melt down or break up any metal coin which is for the time being current in the United Kingdom or which, having been current there, has at any time after 16th May 1969 ceased to be so.

I guess it's one of those 'archaic' laws that nobody bothers to enforce anymore.

BBC R4 aired a programme recently about the rapidly increasing price of metals. Apparently, pre-1992 UK 2p coins are now worth more than 2p because of the increase in copper prices (post 1992 coins contain insufficient copper to make this true - as yet), leading to the temptation to melt them down for profit.

The Mint, the UK's official issuer of coinage, said it was illegal to tamper with UK currency.

I'm pretty sure on this one. I believe the act has been repealed, as stated
by a notice next to those machines that roll a coin into a copper souvenier,
for example there's one at the Brighton Aquarium and also one at the Caves
of Nottingham. As a sidenote, it should be illegal to burn that much money
in public. Aside from the fact I'm broke, there are loads of homeless big
issue sellers in the cities nowadays, and that money would have paid for a
lot of them to have shelter on these cold wintry nights.

Post 1992 1p and 2p have a steel core with a copper layer on top. They are also a lot harder to bend in half....

I think I'd put more faith in a quote from the Royal Mint on a BBC website than a 'legal banter' discussion forum, but it'll be interesting to hear what the City of London says. Perhaps the operators have a 'licence granted by the Treasury' as per the 1971 Coinage Act? I wouldn't bet on it though.

I do know that the machines say, on a notice beside them, that it is no longer an offence to deface a coin, as the Act, or some part of it, was repealed.

Years ago - maybe 20 - I was able to buy bigger repair washers. They were thin, had a diameter of about 1.75", and a small centre hole. I have search high and low for these recently, and found nothing. I thought they would be good for lath/plaster repairs, because I assumed that washers with a greater diameter to spread the load would be better.

A neighbour uncovered some historic plaster repairs and big washers like this had been used.

Are there a rust or corrosion issues with washers?

The above are zinc plated steel so not very good for the long term if scratched.

Look like chassis washers to me. Bet they come in stainless too.
