The painted section at the back of the house, where your leaking gutter is, must have had a lean to of some sort and that is why it is painted and lead flashing poking randomly out of the wall. I bet water is getting in where the lead is and also off the gutter which has probably been botched at the same time as extension built and lean to removed.

Definitely no grants or anything like that, even for the stuff I would have expected (my family, not in the UK, were shocked to hear that we'll have to pay a huge amount for disposal of asbestos roof tiles, for example, in many other places there are government subsidies to help you replace dangerous materials - which would also cover polystyrene ceiling tiles, doh)

I have some artex going if you want some? not happy with just artexing the ceiling they did the bedroom walls too !!!
I think i'll decline the polystyrene tiles :roll: but as my dear old Nan said "if you keep anything long enough they might come back in fashion :lol:

No such luck I'm afraid, thats why some people round here would prefer to bury it instead.
If , on the other hand you were a dangerous heroin addict who just got out of prison and society looked upon you as a threat the government in this country would be bending over backwards to help you out financially.

You do wonder what on earth possessed someone to pebble dash over the original stone. If you wanted to remove the pebble dash, you will hopefully be helped by the slate underneath being so hard - less likely to be damaged as you take the render off. If you decide to do this, start with a small area and hand tools only!

Not neccessarily. I had an old asbestos garage to dispose of here. I was quoted an eye-watering amount for the disposal, but my local authority will accept asestos for free at one of it's recycling centres, so long as it is double bagged & well sealed.

So - £600 for a secondhand trailer, £50 for the correct respirator mask, disposable overalls etc and I got rid of it all - and I still have the trailer

Even if you're getting someone else to take the tiles down, this might be an option for you. Health & Safety Executive have details online in how to safely deal with asbestos cement tiles.

Google "HSE Asbestos" for lots of official, government approved advice. Asbestos cement can be dealt with yourself, other types of asbestos cannot. Roof tiles are highly likely to be asbestos cement. Your local authority website should tell you if they accept asbestos waste at any of their sites.

If that is the south-facing aspect, then my betting would be a greenhouse/porch. As a really cheap, quick, interim-if-it-has-to-be measure, you could slap on a layer or two of basic limewash on the previously painted section,if you think that there is any damp coming through.

It's north-facing actually. It was just outside the former kitchen door so I guess most likely a scullery? There's quite a lot of damp coming through so it's something we really need sorted out asap.

There is a stone cottage about 2 miles from me and it is covered in stone cladding. Does that mean stupid house owner or excellent stone cladding salesman :wink:

There's quite a lot of damp coming through so it's something we really need sorted out asap.

Presumably, though, most of that is coming from the gutter, rather than through the painted section?
