That's not unusual, PP, particularly when the modern plaster has been applied over a mixed bag of older, patched finishes.plasticpigeon said:

Hi Penners, I don't think it is browning as it really does turn to sand, and it also has stones in it and all sorts, even wood shavings in some places! The skim looks a bit like gypsum, but I am pretty sure it is gauged lime (lime gauged with gypsum). I think this as the plaster on the lath ceilings and lath stud walls is the same stuff as the skim, but that colour and consistency throughout except with added hair, so I'm pretty sure it is original. I'll take a pic tomorrow. All this conjecturing, it's like an episode of time team!

In that case, PP, I very much agree with you that it's not browning. Sounds like someone's personal recipe for a (cheap) daub!plasticpigeon said:

Thanks! I loved them too - it's F&B Hague Blue, a lovely deep greeny-blue, like the middle of a peacock feather. I painted it a dark colour to distract from the woodchip wallpaper that infested the place. Have to say though, woodchip is ugly but it's a dream to paint.
