That's more like it. My jealousy has calmed down now!!

One day I shall get a house with a (nice) view. It's made worse by the fact that my house had a lovely view - down a hill, over gently rolling parkland, to a Georgian rectory. A sort of mini-country estate - 2 lodges for the gardeners were just a few doors up from my house

Until 1930, when someone built a housing estate on the parkland. Then in 1970 the rectory itself was demolished, and replaced by houses that truly fit in with the dreadful architecture of most 1970's housing estates (cue outraged Gareth!). Luckily I can't see these. All that is left of the estate now is one of the gardener's lodge houses.

Gareth is spluttering about other things tonight. They've started demolishing the Hoe Centre in Plymouth, built 1949-52 as Plymouth NAAFI, home of the Plymouth School of Architecture 1980-2007, and somewhere I have very fond memories of - all night drawing sessions just before pin-up, fuelled by packet after packet of mini-cheddars.
Nostalgia notwithstanding, it was also a far better building than whatever is going to replace it (privately-funded developer's student flats). Largely unaltered, behind the chipboard.
No salvage, not the bronze light switches, not the panelling, not the oddly out-of-period granite fireplaces, not even the clock mechanism.
Cost £400,000 to build, is costing £600,000 to destroy.

Do the demolition people really not salvage as much as they can of the buildings they destroy? I'm not suggesting they are all nostalgic softies but surely the high prices of salvaged materials would make it worth their while holding back just a little with the wrecking ball while a few chaps stripped the place of fixtures and fittings?

Photographs posted on various "Urban Exploration" websites, and taken this week, show pretty much every interior fitting still in place. Video posted Elsewhere suggests it wasn't removed before demolition.
