When we fitted the new boiler we ended up with radiators (old style) in the main house and underfloor heating in the extension. So we've had one of the coldest winters on record using E7 and the last one using the new system. I have to be honest and say that E7 does have it's merits. Baking in the morning and, even with temperatures outside well below zero during the day, the heaters still had just enough oomph to get us through to about 6pm. After that it was the log burner and thermals. Just no way of controlling it.

We found out that a previous owner had oil fired heating but took it out and put in the E7 because they didn't like the pipes everywhere. :roll: Our plumber did a good job of hiding most of them in the main living area of the house except for the old kitchen which looks a bit like an oil refinery. I'll box those in.

E10 = 3 hours of cheap in the afternoon, 2 hours of cheap in the evening and 5 hours overnight.

E10 is a bit more expensive than E7 but at least you get a lot of the heat when you need it.

In hindsight we should have looked E10 further. We would have needed new heaters all round plus underfloor in the extension. Oil was relatively cheap at the time 45p a litre but everything has gone up since so it's hard to know what would have been cheaper.

I do recall that when the electricians saw our meter box it was as though they had found a stash of electrical porn !!. Apparently we have a 3 phase system that could handle a factory and they were salivating. I just saw a bunch of old mangled wires!

Toby, I love the look of your house, both the old and new bits! As our architect would say, the extension is "subservient" to the house. I particularly like the way the roofline of the new building mimics that of the original. Not that I know anything about architecture, but I know what I like :wink: !

Quite so. I believe this is a planning requirement when designing extensions for listed buildings (but doesn't always seem to be observed!). I think it's very important.

But then I know all about subservience. I've been married for 44 years.

That's interesting. Our 1620ish cottage we just bought - must get round to posting a pic - has an E7+open fires system. My first reaction was to bin the E7 in favour of oil and I started gathering vintage valves, thermostats, programmer etc , but then I thought... hmmm..... the oil price will only go up, and although electric will also go up, electric is subject to political interference whereas oil is subject only to political blather. So fttb I decided to stick with the E7. Didn't know about E10 though, thanks.
I do know however that E7 is 7 hours during an 8 hour window 2400h - 0800h, and the supplier can choose which 7 hours. Think about it, could be 2400 - 0700 or 0100 - 0800h, so if you want to be sure of the cheap(ish) power you have to set your timer from 0100h -0700h which is only 6 hours. Huh.

Our E10 should be 01:00 to 06:00, 14:00 to 17:00 and 21:00 to 23:00.

Ours has got out of sync so currently it is 03:00 to 08:00, 16:00 to 19:00 and 23:00 to 01:00 which is marginally better for us so I haven't bothered to get it corrected.

We are paying £0.1496 per unit and £0.0705 per unit. I would be interested if anybody finds an E10 tariff which is cheaper (and no the price comparison sites don't list E10).

No. It's that stuff that ends up creating 2 - 3ft long icicles that often get the bad guys in movies. I'd never seen them so long until our last two winters came along. The perils of thatched house owning - fire and ice!!

Two friends fishing in a pond by a roadside noticed that a funeral was slowly going by, one of the chaps removed his cap and slowly brought it to his chest . His friend, bemused, commented that it was a nice gesture and lucky to have such a thoughtfull friend and told him so.

Lovely house - and I like the extension.

I used to live in Mistley in Essex and, believe it or not, I had a brand new house (with character!!). It was painted pink and, oh boy, did I get some stick. I told everyone in vane that on the paint tin the builders left me it said it was Salmon. Pink in Essex is very difficult to justify and defend. Katie Price says it all.

When I moved across the estuary to Stutton everyone locally fully understood and appreciated it, however, the guys in my office in London simply saw me going from one pink house to another and I was toast.

A female friend of mine used to own a bright pink Fiat X1/9 sports car - which, especially as she has long blonde hair, didn't give her the most intelligent of appearances when driving it. Like all Fiat's of that era, it was rusting merrily and was terribly unreliable, especially the electrics (FIAT = Fix It Again Tomorrow). One day it broke down near her workplace, she had to get to work so walked the rest of the way and phoned her large, hairy biker boyfriend to come out and meet the AA man.

The boyfriend came out on his motorbike and was sat in the car when the AA man turned up. I've got the AA man full credit for coming out with a classic line to the boyfriend - "Do you always wear leather trousers in your pink car Sir?"

Of course we never remind of him this, ever :wink:
