According to young Miss P (or Mrs M, as she's otherwise known), when she was at Oxford, Cambridge University was always referred to as "The Fenland Polytechnic".

We were never that disparaging, at least not at Trinity.

It's redolent of the House of Lords. You can't refer to it by name in the Commons - it's called The Other Place. FB is Another Place for us.

But surely in our case it's Facebook that's common.

If I remember correctly, the use of the "other place" term on this Forum was originally used when "she-who-must-not-be-named" set up a rival discussion elsewhere. It only became subverted to FB more recently, after a certain PPUK siren lured hapless surfers to befriend her there!

Ah, but at Teddy Hall so many of the other colleges were disparaging about them that they had to cast around outside Oxford for someone to look down on!
