Period Rain!

Rain, rain, rain. This 'ole house is COLD, the bathroom is damp, the dog is cold, I am cold, the drawing room fireplace is cleaned out and filled with fir cones for the summer------ socks and jumper back on ------my hand hovers over the central heating switch---- an hour or two---- NO NO NO

Anyone else struggling ?

It not only went wrong when they announced the hose pipe ban. It went wrong the day I swapped our 13.5 tog winter duvet for a 4.5 tog summer duvet. There's been a cold front in our house with Mrs. T ever since :roll: .

It's also not helped by the fact that our oil tank Watchman has been winking at me for the last month. We are down to one bar although I dipped the tank at the weekend and there's enough to give the house a hot blast if necessary. Just don't tell Mrs. T :twisted:

I reduced CH to 2 hours per day about 2 weeks ago (I keep it going for a couple of hours a day even in summer, just to keep a bit of heat in the walls so-to-speak, and it gives enough hot water not to need the immersion too often - it's all about the trade-off, isn't it :wink: ). But now I'm back to wearing slipper socks in bed and resisting the temptation to push the one-hour-boost button at bedtime :roll: ! It's been such a wierd year (weatherwise) so far, maybe we're going to get a scorcher in July and August for a change. We can only hope...

Took the week off work because of the queens thingy and the bank holiday, its rained all day every day so far.

We are in the middle of having the roof re-done, rotten timber replaced, breathable felt membrane fitted, dodgy asbestos 'Welsh' slates replaced, etc. Started the job at the beginning of the hot spell! So far the builder has only been able to work one week in the last three. And we still have a hose-pipe ban!!

Incidentally I was with the kids at our local planetarium yesterday, watching a show about the sun. Apparently the hydrogen it "burns" in one second would power the US for 900 years. C'mon scientists - sort it out!

Goodness, I'm having a lovely summer. The hens and I ignore the rain, we're all very busy with chicks and broodies and every nest box in the garden full of babies - we've got blackbirds and yellow hammers and bats and owls and robins and wrens and tits and finches and partridges and and... I just run round with bags of feed and dig for worms. The Wildlife Trusts were here today and the area just behind the house ( the Hills and Hollows) has been given conservation status.

And the garden is so lush, for the first time since we've moved here. The area at the back of the Lawn of the Three Graces, which was all nettles, is now lush ferns. And my scabby low yew hedge on the East border, that I was planning to destroy, is suddenly magnificent. And hot showers every day! Perfect.

My house is damp too, and I've lit my stove the last few evenings. I've also demolished the front of the house, and now the bathroom is detached, so I have to step through a puddle in my flipflops and dressing gown in the mornings and at bedtime to go brush my teeth. Kinda like camping but in my own house....
Can't believe how unsettled it is. I'm doing external wall insulation, and dart out with the ladders to try to get a couple more boards on between showers!

Hey, well at least I do not need to feel so guilty/wimpish, but am glad that Joce now has a run of better comforts. Yes the garden is lush, makes you realise that the last two summers did nothing to make the trees and shrubs grow!

Heating still off, but might give in to the two hours in the morning and evening bit if the predicted stormy weather really blows a blaster.Hope you get there soon John Boy!

It's June, off the The South of England Show. So wellies, thermal vest, thick woolly jumper, and padded jacket. Not bothering with the umbrella as it will get blown inside-out in second.

I have the Esse very low except for cooking but the heat from it does not sem to penetrate to the far flung bathroom, still we live in hope and soldier on.!! I'll keep you posted!

No yet, but with their new primary legislation-making powers we voted them last year, they are looking hard at tattoo laws and tanning shop regulations as their first priority.

I do own next door, so it's my own mini-stasi . The eco bit is right though, as I'm working towards energy efficiency by finding out where the energy is used, and trying to save money.

I had put a stop to the lime re-pointing and indoor plastering for the summer. But I'm thinking this might be perfect: warm enough to speed the reaction with carbon dioxide but wet and humid enough to stop it drying out too quickly.

Perhaps that's the way to get the good weather to return. I'll repoint a section of our south facing wall: cue blazing hot sunshine and me running around with reels of hessian and a sprayer trying to keep it damp for a few weeks.
