Period Land Rovers

The problem so many Land Rovers have is that they get bought and driven by people who fancy themselves as off-roaders but know next to nothing about caring for the vehicle.
Hence the failures and breakdowns where they get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

So many wrecked by prats who spend their weekends ploughing through muddy holes at Playday sites, then don't do the necessary maintenance. When I bought the Lightweight, the brakes were corroded, the axles and hubs were full of water, the chassis was full of mud, the engine breather system had been turned into a closed loop. CO was 15%, it ran like a pig. How to ruin a good vehicle.

That was four years and 11,000 miles ago.

Had a SWB series one many years ago,the engine was shot so I fitted a rover 2000 engine with a carb off a mini,it pulled our caravan all over the UK,On investigating a leak from the petrol tank I found a secret compartment with access gained by removing one of the support straps!

That give the term "pot hole" a completely different connotation.

My series 2a was once 6 cylinder (petrol) but was converted to diesel in the mist of time.
It was a good conversion using a transit 2.5 and it goes like a rocket. Cooling pipes and exhaust are a bit of a nightmare though.

In my distant youth, I had Triumph Spitfire, which I loved dearly. It was commonplace, in those days, for sports car* owners - Triumphs, MGs, Austin Healeys, etc, - to wave at drivers of the same type of car, wherever you went.

* Yes, the Spitfire just about qualified as sports car, despite actually being a Triumph Herald in a flashier shirt.

Lime is right, the series defenders especially, are a passion. . . . . . Penners does also make another important point, The motoring world moves on, unfortunately Love and nostalgia for these great workhorses endures.

All of which could equally be said about period properties.

I can confirm that drivers of other Morris Minors wave (you never know where help will come from when the next breakdown comes*!) when I'm out in Phyllis.

Other Disco drivers, however, rarely so. Still, it tows the caravan marvellously and I've high hopes for the winters mud/floods/snow/inclemency to enable me to get to work.

* Although she very rarely breaks down and, on the odd occasion that she has 'failed to proceed' as Mssrs Rolls and Royce had it, she usually does so within walking distance of home irrespective of how far she's been!

My Austin also gives no problems far from home,(I never take it far from home!) but if it did I have Dean the mechanic and if he fails to start it I have the rest of the grand kids to push it! Just been "round the block" in it,this wind adds ten mph to the speed!.

That looks like the most reliable form of propulsion for an elderly Austin, Phil. Slow, but steady, and needing only the occasional Jammie Dodger to keep going.
